When it comes to sex, the female G-spot is a hot topic – some claim that stimulating this erogenous zone inside a woman’s vagina can trigger intensely pleasurable sensations that can lead to orgasm, while others think it’s nothing but a myth. If there’s one thing that’s certain though, as a woman you’ve got nothing to lose by exploring your own body – alone or with a partner. Whatever you discover, searching for the G-spot can be a whole lot of fun for everyone involved and it might just turn out to be the most rewarding treasure hunt you’ve ever been on! Here, we’ve answered all the questions you’ve ever wanted to know about the female G-spot.

What is the g-spot? Is it real?

The idea of a female g spot has been around for longer than you’d think, with a Dutch physician reporting on it as far back as the 17th century. The name G-spot didn’t come about until 1950, after the German scientist, Ernst Gräfenberg, named his new discovery after himself. He described what he found as, ‘An erotic zone located on the anterior wall of the vagina along the course of the urethra that would swell during sexual stimulation’. G-spot believers say it’s a patch of flesh about the size of a coin, located around 2-3 inches inside the vagina at the front of the vaginal wall (the part closest to the stomach).

What does it feel like?

Some women say that the tissue here feels different to the surrounding area – a little thicker, more ridged, or slightly rougher to the touch – and that it plumps up when rubbed or when they’re aroused. Whatever the truth is behind this mysterious ‘magic button’, for some women stimulating a certain point on the vaginal wall can have a brilliant and blissful effect. For these lucky ladies, pressing and caressing this spot feels intensely delicious, and can bring them to orgasm, in a way that feels ‘deeper’ and different to an orgasm brought on by stimulating the clit alone. Others swear that G-spot stimulation can trigger female ejaculation – itself a hotly contested subject - which involves fluid being expelled from the genital area; in some cases, just a few drops, in others a more dramatic squirt or gush. Some women say that stroking the area makes them feel as though they’re going to wee, although sometimes pushing through that initial sensation ends up with an orgasm. As with so much to do with sex and our intimate areas, everyone is different and there’s no norm. If G-spot stimulation does it for you, then that’s A-OK and if it doesn’t, no sweat. It’s all about enjoying the exploration.

Where is the female g-spot?

Intrigued? Find your own G-spot with these five tips for tracking it down.

  1. Smooth a pearl or two of lubricant like Durex Play Feel onto your index finger, slide it into your vagina, then curl the tip towards your belly button, as though you’re beckoning someone to ‘come hither’.
  2. Slowly rub your finger back and forth, side to side, and in circling motions, paying attention to how it feels. If you find an area that feels puffier, harder, bumpier or ridged, you might just be in the right place! Insert your middle finger as well, if you want more.
  3. As you relax into it, experiment with pressing a little harder on that area. A tapping motion might feel great, too.
  4. You can also try using your other hand to press down on the outside of the mons pubis, where your public hair starts to grow – this could push down on the G-spot from the outside of the body – you can try this during sex as well.
  5. Sex toys really come into their own here as they can be a great way to target the G-spot. A vibrator with a curved tip, such as the rabbit-style Durex Extreme Thrill or Durex Ultimate Thrill is a good bet. Slick on some water-based lube and angle the toy so that it bends towards your stomach. Test out different vibration speeds and patterns and try thrusting the toy back and forth.

Now that you’ve officially been introduced to the female g-spot, you might want to try out these sex positions to see if you can reach it that way too!
