We love to masturbate. According to our 2017 Global Sex Survey, globally, six in ten of us currently masturbate/self-pleasure and around a third of us do so at least weekly. Moreover, around 9% of us are masturbating 5 times a week or more.

However, it’s not all good news. Quite surprisingly, some of those questioned in the survey believe masturbation to be harmful.

But why is this the case? Are excessive masturbation side effects something to be worried about? Or, can masturbation actually be good for you?

Is masturbation bad for you?

Masturbation is an activity both common and natural and is by no means a bad thing. It generally has no negative impacts on your physical, sexual or mental health and, provided it doesn’t interfere with activities or stop you from completing daily chores, it can be a really fulfilling and rewarding experience.

If you’re a newcomer to masturbation, it can be an intimidating world to enter. However, you should rest assured that it is by no means something to be afraid of. In fact, there are a number of benefits to masturbating that you may be missing out on by abstaining.

What are the benefits of masturbating?

According to Sutter Health, there is research to suggest that sexual stimulation through masturbation may have several positive effects. These can include the following:

  • Masturbation has the potential to help induce sleep
  • It allows people to become familiar with their own body
  • Masturbation can help alleviate stress
  • It is a source of pleasure and sexual arousal

One of the main benefits of masturbation you perhaps weren’t aware of is that, statistically speaking, it is a very reliable way to achieve an orgasm.

When survey respondents were asked how they best achieve an orgasm as part of our Global Sex Survey, an impressive 20% off men and women reported it was through masturbation.

Yes, that’s right, masturbation came in second only to vaginal sex as the best way to come. Essentially, masturbation is more effective than both oral and anal combined when it comes to the art of coming. Master masturbation and you could find yourself having more orgasms than ever before!

What are effects of excessive masturbation?

Masturbation isn’t harmful, it can be a great way to improve your health and wellbeing. Too much of a good thing can have a negative impact on your life, but is there such thing as too much masturbation?

Through excessive masturbation, you may experience a few side effects. These can include:

  • Chaffing
  • Friction burns
  • General soreness

According to Sutter Health, masturbation can also become an addiction which can interfere with your activities of daily living. If you feel masturbation is hampering your daily life, then you should seek the advice of a healthcare professional.

I’m not masturbating, should I be?

Masturbation can be great; it can be a wonderful way to manage stress and it can be the perfect day or night-time ‘me’ activity. However, it is important to note that there is absolutely nothing wrong with not masturbating.

Our Global Sex Survey indicates that 18% of respondents were not currently masturbating at the time the survey was carried out, with 10% of respondents claiming to have never masturbated.

Maybe masturbation doesn’t align with your spiritual beliefs, maybe you are saving yourself for your wedding day. Whatever the reason, if you have decided to refrain from masturbation, this is nothing to be ashamed of and you are by no means alone in your choice.

How can I make masturbation better?

Have you or your partner found yourself tired of the usual routine? Perhaps you are looking for a little something special to spice up your solo or mutual masturbation? Lubes and pleasure gels can be a great way to do just that.
